"What I am most thankful for during this crazy time are the moments with family that are easily forgotten when life is hectic."

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather that assessment that something else is more important than fear." - Franklin D. Roosevelt

A phrase we are hearing over and over again is that we are in a time of uncertainty. How true and how scary that can feel. Even with the best of planning our daily life is anything but ordinary and nothing is certain or can be taken as absolute. How can we get out of our own way and help ourselves out? We do this by looking for those who can help us to focus on what we can control: ourselves. We are only in control of ourselves.

-Mrs. Allison Urbanovich

SHS Social Studies Teacher

Keep in mind that you are in control of how much of any topic you are seeing and allowing into your sightline. If you are having trouble limiting overwhelming information like what you see on the news or media that is hurting your perspective on moving/ ability to move forward, try setting timers that remind you to take a break or move to something different. You can even set timers when it comes to classwork. Take a 5-10 minute break for every 20 minutes of work. You are not working under typical homeschooling conditions. You are participating in distance learning during a pandemic.

Ultimately, whatever sources are allowing you the opportunity to purposefully think about something that brings you moments of joy or to reclaim your breath, set a timer or alarm that will encourage you to participate in that daily.

A quick way to check in with yourself and reclaim the calm in the moment is practicing a "box breath" or square breathing. A square has 4 equal sides and thus your breath will match each side.

To do this, close your eyes or let your eyelids be heavy.

In your mind, picture a box/square.

Each breath will be equal to one side of a square or the box.

Inhale: picture the top of the box being drawn.

Exhale: picture the side of the box being drawn.

Inhale: picture the bottom of the box being drawn.

Exhale: picture the other side of the box being drawn.

Set a time for 1 minute. Continue this practice and add time as needed/wanted.

(*bonus: What colors do you see while participating in this breathing exercise? Acknowledge whatever comes into your mind, dismiss the thought and return to the box you are creating and matching with your breath in your mind.)
